Seventeen Seventy has the distinction of being one of only three places in Queensland you will see the sunset directly over water. The others being the Carlo Sand Blow at Rainbow Beach and Moreton Island.

Nestled on the Southern Great Barrier Reef, about a four hour drive up from the Sunshine Coast, this gorgeous seaside village might live in the shadow of its more popular neighbour Agnes Water. Yet, it nonetheless boasts a gorgeous location flanked on three sides by the Coral Sea and Bustard Bay with the Discovery Coast region of the state.

The town is given its unusual name in recognition of the historic landing of Captain Cook in – you guessed it – 1770, after he had previously rocked up to Botany Bay in New South Wales with the crew of the Endeavour. A fact that leads locals to proudly claim it to be the birthplace of Queensland.

It is renowned for being one of the loveliest of all Gladstone Beaches and resides in an area of natural beauty that offers scenic views and recreational activities in every direction.

 

 

Where is Seventeen Seventy?

1770 resides on a wonderful stretch of sub-tropical surf coastline that is about an hour’s drive from Gladstone and Bundaberg and runs north of K’gari (formerly Fraser Island) and southwards from the Whitsundays.

It is about 6 kilometres to the north of Agnes Water, which is famous for being the northern most surf beach in Queensland.

The easiest way to get to Seventeen Seventy is to drive, which most people do via the Bruce Highway and the lovely town of Miriam Vale.

 

 

Things To Do In Seventeen Seventy

The town of Seventeen Seventy is known for having terrific weather all year round, which makes it a fabulous destination for a Queensland family holiday.

Boasting no less than 300 days of sunshine from January to December, the locals revel in the fact that the weather is never too cold and never too hot.

The dry and warm winters mean you can swim, surf or fish all year round, while it is also an excellent spot for kayaking, SUP, wakeboarding and canoeing.

However, if you would rather stretch your legs, you can always hike around any of the four National Parks that reside near it. Namely Round Hill, Eurimbula, Deepwater and Mount Colosseum.

For those who would keep on a coastal vibe, you can also visit several other Southern Great Barrier Reef beaches within easy driving distances.

One of the main attractions of Seventeen Seventy is that it is a departure point for fishing charters, diving expeditions, reef cruises and snorkelling tours around the Southern Great Barrier Reef.

In addition, you can also visit nearby Lady Musgrave Island or organise a day tour to the historic Bustard Heads lighthouse.
