Beautiful Fishing Village Where the Burrum River Meets the Ocean
Hervey Bay might have top billing on the Fraser Coast, but just a short 20 minute drive away is the scenic village of Burrum Heads, which is a place where the Burrum River and the ocean combine to stunning effect.
Here, you’ll find quaint boats lining the shimmering crystal water, and a gently curving stretch of north-east facing beach that runs from the mouth of the Burrum River all the way south to the mouth of the Beelbi Creek.
The main drawcard at Burrum Heads is fishing and crabbing, which you can do at the river mouth, channels and tidal shoals. However, at high tide, the beach offers fairly safe swimming and good conditions for kayaking, while low tide reveals expansive sand flats that are great for walking. If you do take to the water, exercise caution at the creek mouths and river as the water can be deep and the tidal currents very strong.
Backing the beach are foredune ridges that are up to 2 km wide in some places, that give Burrum Heads a sense of remoteness that will instantly relax you, which is reinforced by the low visitor numbers it receives in comparison to Hervey Bay.
