While many tourists to the Sunshine Coast head straight to Caloundra, Mooloolaba or Noosa, those in the know spend their Queensland holiday at Peregian Beach.
Situated about 13 km south of Noosa Heads, this stunning destination is part of a collection of gorgeous beaches that reside between Coolum and Noosa. It is patrolled all year round and is a popular spot for swimming, long beach walks, surfing and activities like paddleboarding, kayaking and wakeboarding.
There are plenty of holiday rentals and Peregian Beach accommodation options for those who want to self-cater, while the David Low Way, which flanks the coastline a couple of streets back from the sand, takes you to several nearby points of interest.
These include the Peregian Environmental Park, the beautiful Lake Weyba National Park, the Noosa National Park and the famous Noosa Everglades.
Backing the beach is a lively and relaxed beachside village square, which features a selection of fantastic restaurants, cafes and boutique shops. Moreover, if you happen to be in town on the first or third week Sunday of the month, the Peregian Beach markets are the perfect place to pick up some fabulous arts, crafts, jewellery and other shopping gems.

Where is Peregian Beach?
Peregian Beach is one of many beaches on the Sunshine Coast you can choose to visit for a Queensland holiday.
It is located roughly 128 km north of Brisbane and about 26 km from Maroochydore. More specifically is a part of the string of beaches that run concurrently between Noosa Heads and Coolum.
The beach is bounded by the Coral Sea and flanked by Lake Weyba to the north and Noosa National Park to the east. It resides on land traditionally owned by the Kabi Kabi people and is believed to take its name from the local word for ’emu’ or ‘perridhan/jan’ which means mangrove seeds.
During the Second World War, Peregian Beach was used for military artillery training.

Best Time To Visit Peregian Beach
Like the rest of the Sunshine Coast, the Peregian Beach weather is defined by over 300 days of sunshine every year. So, it is a destination you can visit on any given month.
It is worth noting that the beach is very exposed to the elements. So, in the summer months, there isn’t much in the way of shade to protect yourself from the sun. For this reason, I would recommend you bring a cabana or umbrella with you. Additionally, if it is raining, there aren’t that many places to run for cover on the sand itself – though the town centre is only a minute or so off the beachfront.
That said, if you want to go swimming, sunbathing or surfing, conditions at Peregian Beach Queensland are particularly pleasant for doing that between Novemeber and April. However, there can sometimes be a bit of a wind during the cooler months of the year, though the sun will feel good topping up your vitamin D levels on your face and skin.
Throughout the year, holiday accommodation prices mirror the rest of the region. But you should be able to pick up reasonable deals, in particular, between the months of May and November.
What Facilities do they have at Peregian Beach?
Thanks to its position less than 50 metres from the village square, there are some very good facilities for tourists and visitors to use at Peregian Beach Qld.
As you might expect, there are public toilets, drinking taps, showers, shade shelters, picnic tables and BBQs within the Peregian Beach Park, which directly overlooks the sand.
But you will also find a large skate bowl there and two different sets of playground equipment nearby. The park also has an expansive grassy area where you can play footy, practice yoga or lay down on a towel.
Several eateries and shops can be reached within a couple of minutes’ walking distance of the beach, and there are quite a few parking spots available in the main car park on Kingfisher Drive and surrounding streets.
There is a nice selection of holiday accommodations in and around Peregian Beach, many of which are family-friendly and dog-friendly.
How to get to Peregian Beach
Peregian Beach is a pretty straightforward destination to get to for your Queensland family holiday or romantic getaway.
The coastal town associated with it is easily accessed by the David Low Way, which runs straight past it. Therefore, if you are driving from within the Sunshine Coast, simply type in Kingfisher Drive or the Peregian Beach Hotel on your satellite navigation. You should have no trouble getting there via the Sunshine Motorway or surrounding roads, especially if you use Google Maps or Waze.
Depending on your starting point, you might need to take the M1 or D’Aguilar Highway to the Sunshine Coast. Again, either of these apps will direct you there.
Once you arrive at Peregian Beach, you can try and park at the main car park on Kingfisher Drive. However, as it is often busy, you might struggle to get a space there. Subsequently, I would recommend driving up to Pelican Street, which leads off from it. This is a long road, so you should have no trouble finding a parking spot there.
For those who need to fly into the area, the Sunshine Coast Airport at Marcoola receives regular flights from Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin from all over Australia.
Alternatively, you can touch down at Brisbane Airport or Hervey Bay. From all three, you will be able to hire a car from major rental companies like Avis, Hertz or Budget.

Things to do at Peregian Beach
The golden sand, of course, takes top billing of all the Peregian Beach attractions, and it is perfect for spending the day sunbathing, swimming and surfing.
The beach is patrolled by the Peregian Beach Surf Life Saving Club, so as long as you stay between the flags, you should be able to enjoy a day of fun in the sun without any problems. Just remember to take appropriate measures to protect yourself.
If you fancy going for a long walk, this Sunshine Coast beach is perfect for doing so. It stretches all the way towards Coolum, southwards, and Sunshine Beach in the northerly direction, which makes it a brilliant beach to exercise on.
As the beach flanks the Coral Sea, it is a popular spot for activities like kayaking, paddleboarding and wakeboarding. Moreover, if you are an early riser, you’ll also get to see an amazing sunrise here.

Peregian Beach Accommodation
There is a nice selection of holiday accommodations in and around Peregian Beach, many of which are family-friendly and dog-friendly.
One of the most popular places to stay is Essence Peregian Beach. This is the only luxury resort in town, comprising a deluxe boutique hotel and twenty holiday homes. It is located directly across the road from the main dining and restaurant area and is just a five-minute walk to the beach. If you stay here, you get to enjoy rooms that have been furnished to a five-star standard. There is also a fabulous restaurant onsite, which is open for brunch through till dinner and offers varied menus for children.
Another good option is the Retreat Beach Houses. Nestled behind the sand dunes, this fabulous five-acre beachfront accommodation offers one to three bedroom self-contained apartments with full kitchens and laundry facilities. The property features a lagoon-style swimming pool which is perfect for a refreshing dip on a hot day. It also has a tennis court and barbecue facilities.
If you are coming with your four-legged friend, the Beachcomber Peregian Beach is a great choice. This dog-friendly accommodation is just 100 metres from the beach and 2 km from the Peregian village centre. It comprises just six apartments so you will be able to enjoy peace and quiet as well as a terrific location.
Elsewhere, the Glen Eden Beach Resort is a lovely tranquil complex of units that also has a swimming pool and direct beach access.

Peregian Beach Restaurants
As you might expect from a Sunshine Coast holiday destination, the standard of Peregian Beach restaurants and cafes has really improved over the last decade. Throughout the Peregian Village Square and Marketplace, as well as in neighbouring Peregian Springs, there are some excellent places to eat. So, you don’t have to worry about wanting for dining choices.
One of the best places to eat is the Pitchfork Restaurant on Kingfisher Drive. It serves up a delicious menu of modern Australian cuisine with a fair bit of panache and has an excellent wine menu.
Another good option is the Periwinkle Restaurant, a classy, fine-dining venue that offers its contemporary take on classic French dishes with a subtle Mediterranean twist.
Elsewhere, Coconut Kulture is an excellent Thai restaurant in the Peregian Breeze Park that offers a terrific selection of red, green, yellow, and other curries. Moreover, Indique Indian Kitchen & Bar, not too far from it, serves beef korma, lamb vindaloo, and chicken tikka masala.
If you fancy some good old fish and chips, the Captain’s Daughter is a funky place on Heron Street that also plates up excellent burgers and cool bar snacks like tempura prawns and barramundi spring rolls.

Shops at Peregian Beach
When you fancy some time away from the sand, there is a good selection of Peregian Beach shops you can check out in the village square. Here you will find a selection of boutique stores selling a range of homewares, clothing boutique and other unique pieces that have been made by local designers.

The boutique retailers within the complex offer a range of items from men and women’s clothings and jewellery to antiques and homewares. Whilst there, take the opportunity to visit The Men’s Room, Cloth and Hide, Bendouin Traders and Alexander Rose Diamonds to see the great products they have available. You will also find an IGA and a Cellarbrations bottle shop, within the complex.
If you happen to time your visit to coincide with the first and third Sunday of the month, make sure you check out the Peregian Beach Markets. It is a great opportunity to mingle with locals and peruse a range of stalls that offer fresh organic produce, locally made arts and crafts and various gift items.
Coffee at Peregian Beach
If you are wondering where you can your caffeine fix in Peregian, don’t worry. There are several places you can head to.
The Peregian Village Market is home to Skål Coffee, one of the best coffee shops on the Sunshine Coast. Located next door to the bakery, this funky joint offers Padre coffee, has both inside and outside seating, and boasts a hip and laid-back vibe.
Elsewhere in the village, you can pick up a delicious espresso from the Outer Cafe, while the Hand of Fatima Cafe serves up a terrific selection of lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites as well.
Over on Grebe Street, the Peregian Pantry also has great coffee, although it is actually better known for the many delectable flavours of ice cream it sells.
Ultimately, Peregian Beach can be seen as a destination that showcases the best of everything you’ll find in the region, with its own little twist.
Final Thought
If I had to sum up Peregian Beach in a sentence, I would say the following. It is a place where you can enjoy the classic feel of the sand on your feet and the salty air in your face, with a generous sprinkling of fashion and food thrown into the mix for good measure.
Peregian is a place unlike anywhere else on the Sunshine Coast. While it has a great stretch of beach like Mooloolaba, Mudjimba and Kings Beach, Caloundra, it is not as popular among tourists as those coastal towns. It also has a vibe and selection of shops not too dissimilar to Noosa, but without the air of exclusivity it radiates, while its food and coffee options are every bit as good as Maroochydore, yet not as busy.
Ultimately, Peregian Beach can be seen as a destination that showcases the best of everything you’ll find in the region, with its own little twist. For this reason, it should be on the bucketlist of every tourist to southeast Queensland. It has a magical vibe you simply must experience.
