Introduction

Nestled at the southern end of Coolangatta beach, Greenmount Beach Gold Coast is one of Southeast Queensland’s most idyllic spots.

Sheltered by a craggy headland, the north facing beach is one of the beaches on the Gold Coast to enjoy a low-key day of swimming, surfing or fishing on the glistening waters of the Coral Sea.

Surrounded by lush parklands, this lovely spot makes a nice contrast to its busier neighbour. It also has everything you need in terms of facilities and amenities without the massive crowds you might find elsewhere.

When not on the sand, take a stroll along the beachfront path that lines the coastal headland of Greenmount Point, which separates Coolangatta from Rainbow Bay. On a clear day you get a great view of the coastline and if you time your visit right you might even get to see migrating whales or dolphins frolicking in the water.

Like most of South East Queensland, Greenmount Beach is a coastal destination you can visit all through the year, though the timing of when you go there may impact your enjoyment of it.

Where is Greenmount Beach Gold Coast?

Greenmount Beach is located on the Gold Coast in Queensland. It is about a 45 minute drive from Surfer’s Paradise and about a 90 minute run from Brisbane. You will find it at the south eastern end of Coolangatta Beach adjacent to Greenmount Point, which is a coastal headland that divides Coolangatta Beach to its north and Rainbow Bay to its south.

The north-facing Coolangatta-Greenmount Beach runs for 800 metres and is tucked in between the Greenmount groyne (which extends off Kirra Point for 200 metres) and Greenmount Hill, a prominent, 30-metre high promontory. It is skirted on its western end by Marine Parade, which runs parallel to its entire length and the Gold Coast Highway, which is protected by it from a seawall that prevents episodic erosion.

Greenmount Beach Gold Coast sits on land traditionally owned by the Yugambeh people. It gets its name from the hill in which it resides next to.

  • Best Time To Visit Greenmount Beach Gold Coast

Like most of South East Queensland, Greenmount Beach is a coastal destination you can visit all through the year, though the timing of when you go there may impact your enjoyment of it.

Between the months of December to February the weather is likely to be very hot and humid, with the mercury regularly topping 33 degrees Celsius and humidity being upwards of 70%. Whilst this makes for good sunbathing conditions on sunny days, the beach is likely to be crowded, particularly during the school holidays. Holiday accommodation prices also tend to be more expensive at this time of year, while there is also a big chance of heavy rain or storm – sometimes with little warning – given that it is also the wet season.

As a result, you might want to time your visit to the months of October to November and March to April. You will find the weather much more agreeable, with clearer skies and much less chance of rain. Hotel and resort accommodation is also likely to be cheaper and less crowded and the water temperature is not too bad for regular swimmers.

During the period of May through to September, Greenmount Beach Gold Coast is still a lovely place to visit. It is much less crowded than other times of the year, which means you can enjoy a more serene side of it if you wrap up a bit warmer. That said, surfers love coming here in August when the swell is consistent and clean.

What Facilities do they have at Greenmount Beach Gold Coast?

At Greenmount Beach Gold Coast there are a good range of facilities to ensure tourists and holidaymakers can make the most of their time there. For those who want to take in the magnificent views of the Coral Sea and wider coastline there is an excellent viewing platform where you can linger for a while.

Other facilities include public amenities like toilets and showers. There are also barbecue areas with picnic tables and picnic shelters, should you want to cook up an al fresco feast of sausages, fish, steak or burgers, and a few bins to dispose of your rubbish accordingly.

You will also find limited parking and accessible parking available near the Greenmount Surf Club and surrounding streets, while bicycle racks are also provided for those who come to the beach on two wheels.

In terms of things to do at Greenmount Beach Gold Coast, swimming, surfing and fishing are three of the main drawcards.

How to get to Greenmount Beach Gold Coast

Greenmount Beach Gold Coast is an easy destination to get to by car. If you are driving down south from Brisbane or beyond, or north from Byron Bay or further towards Sydney, you will need to take the M1 at some point. After that you should follow signs to get to Coolangatta Beach before making your way to Greenmount.

Alternatively, depending on where you are, you might need to take the Gold Coast Highway. The best thing to do is to let a sat navigation app like Waze take you there – just make sure you have your Bluetooth on so you can hear the instructions.

If you don’t have a car Translink runs several buses throughout South East Queensland that can drop you off very near the beach along Griffith Street. Use their journey planner to find the most appropriate one for you.

Those flying in for a Gold Coast Holiday will probably arrive at either Brisbane Airport or the Gold Coast Airport. From both transit hubs you can hire cars to take you to Greenmount Beach as most of the major rental companies including Hertz, Budget and Avis have operations at them.

If you don’t want to hire a car you can catch a taxi or Uber or take a bus.

  • Things to do at Greenmount Beach Gold Coast

In terms of things to do at Greenmount Beach Gold Coast, swimming, surfing and fishing are three of the main drawcards.

There is one lifeguard tower that is patrolled all year round by the front of the Greenmount Beach Surf Club, which sits on the corner of Hill Street. It is manned between 8 am and 5 pm and makes a fabulous place for families to swim in a safe environment – so long as you stay between the red and yellow flags. That said, you should always be mindful of troughs and deep rip channels.

As Greenmount is incorporated within the World Surfing Reserve, it is a very popular destination for surfers to ride the waves. Generally speaking, it is more suited to those who are new to the sport or at an intermediate level as the swell is a bit slower paced than other parts of the area’s iconic southern point break.

For those who want a bit more of a challenge, the best waves can be caught by Greenmount Hill. This area produces an easy and long right-hander, when the bars are right.

Fishing is also a popular pastime at this section of beach as there are usually gutters and nice holes to exploit. You should also have success casting a line over at Greenmount Hill and around the Greenmount groyne.

Beach walking and combing are other pleasurable activities to partake in during your time at Greenmount.

    Greenmount Beach Accommodation

As you would expect considering its location besides Coolangatta Beach there are plenty of places to stay near Greenmount Beach. Outlined below is a selection of some of the most popular venues. You can make a reservation at any of them here.

One of the best options is the Greenmount Beach House which is a beachfront property just 100 metres from the sand. Some of these rooms have a patio or private balcony and offer lovely views of the river or ocean, while there is also a really cool outdoor swimming pool onsite with a water slide.

Another good choice just 400 metres from the beach is Nirvana By The Sea. These charming holiday apartments offer an excellent selection of amenities including kitchen facilities for those who want to self cater. Rooms also come with a private balcony, some of which showcase views of the Coral Sea. It also has a swimming pool and guests can rent out bicycles.

    Greenmount Beach Restaurants

When you are feeling hungry, there are plenty of funky cafes, cool restaurants and quaint bistros along the main drag that links Coolangatta Beach to Greenmount Beach, which you can eat at. You’ll find a wide range of food genres covered at these establishments, so the best thing you can do is take a walk up and down it to see and smell what takes your fancy.

If you are looking for somewhere to eat at Greenmount Beach Gold Coast directly opposite its access points, one of the best options is The Deck Restaurant at the Greenmount Beach Surf Club. As you would expect from a surf club they also have a fantastic kids menu, a terrific drinks selection and family-friendly entertainment.

For those fancying a stir fry or a nasi goreng, Pan Asia Rice and Noodles is a good option. Here the service is quick and the portion size, like at the surf club is huge. The food is also very tasty.

Also on Marine Parade, Loko’s offers good choices for those wanting an on-the-go-snack or a hearty home-style meal. Their homemade burgers are mouthwatering and they also have a very good carvery, which you can enjoy in a pleasant indoor/outdoor setting.

Elsewhere, just a road back on Griffith Street, The Pink Hotel Coolangatta is a fabulous dinner option. It stays open until midnight, serves great cocktails and hosts regular live music. It also has a varied bar food type menu that will not leave you hungry.

Wherever you decide to eat, it’s worth noting that during school holidays and most weekends it is important to make a reservation in advance. Otherwise you might find yourself waiting for quite a while until you get seated.

If you find yourself visiting Coolangatta Beach you should make a point of strolling down to its southern end, where Greenmount Beach Gold Coast resides. Defined by the striking headland from which it takes its name, this idyllic spot is perfect for family-friendly swims and adrenaline fuelled surfs.

While it is by no means remote or deserted, the vibe here is much less frenetic than you will experience up at the northern reaches of its stretch of sand. For this reason, you’ll be able to enjoy two very different beaches in one during your time here, which will go some way towards showcasing how diverse a Gold Coast Queensland holiday can be.
