Your Ultimate Guide to Visiting Town Beach Mackay (UPDATED 2025)

Review of Town Beach Mackay

Town Beach Mackay is one of those places you will instantly fall in love with.

Residing just a stone’s throw from the Mackay CBD, it is the perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of the area if you’re chasing sun, sand, and a nice spot to relax.

It’s not quite a hidden gem, considering its proximity to the city. But given its length and expanse of sand, it certainly feels like one for the first time visitor.

Overall, this charming Queensland spot is perfect for relaxing, walking and enjoying the incredible Australian coastline. Here’s what makes it such a lovely place to visit.

Where is Town Beach Mackay?

Town Beach Mackay is one of many beaches you can visit in the Mackay Region.

It is situated on Queensland’s east coast, not far below the halfway point of the state and can be reached within a five minute drive from the city centre. Despite this, it is surprisingly peaceful and secluded.

Thankfully, due to its central location, Town Beach Mackay is well sign-posted and easy to find (though I would always recommend using an app like Google Maps or Waze).

So, it is perfect for both locals wanting a quick escape and travellers looking to explore the raw beauty of this part of Central Queensland.

However, if you’re after a proper break and staying in Mackay, it is a wonderful Beach to unwind and recharge your batteries over a few days. While there are no hotels or holiday accommodations directly overlooking the beach, there are plenty nearby. Therefore, it should be easy enough to spend a few days relaxing by the sea.

Trust me, you’ll enjoy it so much, you’ll find it hard to leave Town Beach Mackay, no matter how long you spend there!

What is the Best time to visit Town Beach in Mackay?

Due to the region’s tropical climate, Town Beach Mackay is a coastal area you can visit all year round.

It will, of course, be much hotter if you do this during the summer months of December to February – as opposed to between June and August which represents winter – when the temperatures regular exceed 30 degrees Celsius and 70% humidity.

However, whenever you go, you shouldn’t spend too much time out in the sun and protect yourself from UV rays.

You also aren’t recommended to visit the beach before sunrise and after sunset because the area resides within known crocodile country.

Things to do at Town Beach Mackay

Town Beach Mackay is a popular spot for locals and a major highlight of the Bluewater Trail, which links Town Beach to several other scenic spots around Mackay..

Unfortunately, swimming is not advisable due to the presence of stingers and crocodiles, and the fact the beach is not patrolled by surf lifesavers. If you want to go for a dip, you would be better off heading to places like Blacks Beach, Lamberts Beach, Bucasia Beach and Eimeo Beach, which offer safer conditions.

However, what you can do at Town Beach in Mackay is walk along the shoreline where you can take in superb views of both Flat and Round Top Islands and Dalrymple Bay from the shoreline. Both which are particularly spectacular when illuminated by the colours of sunset (though you should be mindful of crocodiles in the fading light).

Fishing is another popular activity here and can cast a line right off the shore. If you’re travelling with kids, the adjacent Iluka Park has a playground where they can burn off some excess energy.
