Nestled within the city’s Northern Beaches precinct in North Queensland, this hidden gem offers a serene escape, which makes it the perfect destination for those visiting the region on a holiday, weekend getaway, or even just a day trip.
Here is my review of what makes Saunders Beach such a terrific place for beach lovers to head to.
Discovering Saunders Beach
Saunders Beach is one of several beaches in Townsville you should put on your bucketlist.
It is situated about a 20 minute drive north-west of the Townsville CBD lies and is easy to get to via the Bruce Highway.
The quiet, picturesque beach is a lovely spot for those wanting to escape the crowds, as it offers visitors an authentic Queensland coastal experience.
You won’t find many people here, particularly during the week, which allows you to take in its incredible natural beauty without the heavy foot traffic typical of some more well-known beaches in the area.
The sand itself extends for over six kilometres, and comprises a soft, golden-white complexion that feels incredible beneath your feet.
Unlike busier beaches closer to town, Saunders Beach remains largely untouched. So, it provides- an idyllic setting to relax, recharge, and soak in the tranquillity of one of North Queensland’s must beautiful shorelines.

At first glance, Saunders Beach Townsville is a beautiful stretch of sand. However, there is a lot more to it than that.

Saunders Beach is not patrolled, and there are no stingers nets. So, it is advisable not to swim here, not least because crocodiles might be present in the area.

Early risers can catch spectacular sunrises over the Coral Sea (just don’t go too close to the water), while afternoons are ideal for hunting shells, driftwood, or simply taking in the refreshing sea breeze.
