Beautiful Moreton Bay Region Beaches Accessible by Bridge from the Mainland

Beach view at Bribie Island in Queensland, Australia

Are you looking for the best Bribie Island beach to visit from Brisbane? Well you are in luck.

In this post, I’ll provide you with a rundown of six excellent destinations you should visit on this fabulous sand island.

About Bribie Island

Bribie Island has the distinction of being the only island in Queensland that is connected to the mainland by a road bridge. (Chambers Island, near Maroochydore on the Sunshine Coast has a bridge connected to it, but it is a footbridge).

The smallest of three main sand islands that form the coastline which shelters the northern part of Moreton Bay, Bribie is a popular day trip destination for Brisbanites who would rather not drive an hour plus to the Gold Coast or Sunshine Coast.

It only takes about 45 minutes to get from the Brisbane CBD to the island, which involves travelling over the Pumicestone Passage along the Bribie Island Bridge. Once there, you’ll find yourself on a 30 km long and 8 km wide stretch of sand Island that is home to six awesome Bribie Island beach destinations.

In addition, you’ll find plenty of residential and holiday accommodation here, along with several cafes, takeaway shops, restaurants, bars, and grocery stores.

Bribie Island Beach Destinations

If you are planning a visit, either on a day trip or as part of a longer holiday, here are six awesome Bribie Island beach destinations you should make a point of going to.

Banksia Beach

If you are looking for a Bribie Island beach where you can go swimming then Banksia Beach is a great option.

Situated on the passage side of the island, this family-friendly spot has a playground, toilets, and picnic areas, which make it a great place to set yourself up for the day.

Those into fishing, boating, and 4WD will want to take advantage of the sand boat ramp, while dog walkers can take their pooch for an on-leash bit of exercise along a dedicated walking track.

Away from the sand, be sure to check out the talking monument, which you can find out about the landing of Matthew Flinders.

Sylvan Beach

While Banksia Beach is a lovely beach for swimming, many people consider Sylvan Beach to be the Bribie Island beach to go for a dip in the water. The waves are generally quite manageable here (though you should always be aware of rips) and there are also BBQ and picnic areas, toilets and playgrounds for all the family to enjoy.

Additionally, the Volunteer Marine Rescue is situated here, while there is a boat ramp, bait and tackle shop and boat hire available in the area. When you get hungry, there are several cafes dotted around where you can buy coffee and lunch.

Woorim Beach

Those wanting to base themselves at a patrolled surfing Bribie Island beach should head to Woorim Beach.

As it is the closest to Brisbane, it is a very popular spot for people wanting to escape the city for a while.

Again, you’ll find plenty of cafes, as well as shops by this Beach and there is even a skate park not too far away to complement the usual amenities you would expect.

Bongaree Beach

When conditions are calm, Bongaree Beach is reasonably safe for swimming, although in the Pumicestone channel, which runs parallel to it there can be strong tidal currents which can be difficult to battle against, so caution is required.

Perhaps the biggest attraction on this beach is the Bongaree Jetty, which children love to jump off and paddle around. It is also a superb spot for fishing, although many anglers choose to cast a line off the shore near the seawall, which has been built to counter erosion.

Technically, this beach is the nearest surf beach on the northern side to Brisbane. However, the quality of waves isn’t the best and the low shore break often closes out in the larger surf.

If you plan on coming here bring some snags to cook on the barbecue areas or a packed lunch to enjoy on one of the many sheltered picnic that are dotted around the area.

Red Beach

When it is time to take your four legged friend for a walk, head on over to Red Beach, which is considered to be the best Bribie Island beach for letting your dog run around off-leash.

You won’t find any amenities here, and high tide can be very high, so it’s possibly not the best beach for families or older people. However, you do get exceptional views of Moreton Island here which you’ll want to spend a bit of time taking in.

Skirmish Point

Generally speaking, Skirmish Point is the least visited Bribie Island beach. However, it is a wonderful spot to fish, and its gorgeous landscape provides plenty of lovely spots to look at when sunbathing or walking.
